FAW McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards 2022

The heroes of Welsh grassroots football were honoured at the 2022 FAW McDonald’s Grassroot Football Awards ceremony.

Deserving volunteers from across the country were given awards for their contribution to grassroots football in Wales.

Canton Liberal FC were awarded Community Club of the Year. The club is fuelled by the enthusiasm of its volunteers, from coaches to team helpers to committee members, driven by a desire to make sessions inclusive, supportive and fun. 

Undy AFC coach Sam O’Shaughnessy won Community Coach of the Year for her dedication to growing the club’s girls’ section by being the inspiration behind Undy AFC’s successful Huddle programme.

Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Clarbeston Road’s Steve Brown who is the club chair and has volunteered since 1997. His skilled administration, commitment and vision has elevated the club to platinum, the FAW’s highest level of accreditation.

Margam Stags YC were awarded Best Grassroots Football Story. Dedicated to those with a wide range of physical and learning disabilities, Margam Stags are a mini community that has created a safe and supportive environment for children and parents. 

Game on Wales won Fun Football Provider of the Year for their free weekly sessions that are held across former mining communities, bringing joy to children living in socially deprived areas. Their free turn-up and play sessions have inspired nearly 1,000 children and young people.

Barry Town United Women AFC captain Lauren Harris was awarded Rising Star of the Year for her contribution to girl’s grassroots football. Lauren is an inspiration to her community and a role model for the next generation. 

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Project of the Year was awarded to Rosehill Community Football Club. Rosehill Community Football Club are an example of a club where truly everyone is accepted. The club’s ethos is to give all the children the best possible experience and feel part of a family able to thrive in everyday life.

McDonald’s Newport received the award for Football Restaurant of the year for their teams inspiring work and selfless attitude, going above and beyond to offer the best in football provision to their local community and local team, Villa Dino Juniors F.C.
