Seven clubs booked their places in the draw for the JD Welsh Cup quarter-finals following Sunday’s fourth-round ties.
Declan McManus and Ben Clark both scored braces as the defending champions The New Saints hit seven past Newtown. Ryan Astles and Ryan Brobbel were also on the scoresheet for the Saints, while an own goal from Callum Roberts had the hosts 3-0 up at the break.
The other all-JD Cymru Premier tie in the fourth round saw 10-man Pontypridd United beat nine-man Bala Town 2-1. Chris Venables and Nathan Peate got the goals for the hosts and Danny Williams’ stoppage-time strike only proved to be a consolation for the visitors.
Penalties were required between Pontardawe Town and Airbus UK Broughton following a 1-1 draw at Parc Ynysderw, with George Peers cancelling out Lewis Reed’s opener. Airbus captain Stephen Tomassen struck the decisive spot-kick as the Wingmakers won the shootout 5-4.
Buckley Town came from two goals down against Briton Ferry Llansawel to earn a 2-2 draw in normal time but fell out of the competition on penalties. Kris Evans and Thomas Walters were both on target for the home side, who were pegged back following goals from Jake Roberts and substitute Max Moore. The home side went on to win 8-7 in the shootout.
Goals from Mael Davies and Kostya Georgievsky helped the 2021/22 runners-up Penybont on their way to the last eight as they overcome JD Cymru North side Gresford Athletic at Clappers Lane.
Elsewhere, Connah’s Quay Nomads also beat Llanelli Town by the same scoreline thanks to goals in each half from Ben Nash and Joe Malkin. Llanelli had the opportunity to draw level from the spot in the second half but Josef Hopkins saw his penalty kept out by Nomads goalkeeper Andy Firth.
While two first-half strikes from Ilan Ap Gareth and Daniel Andrews helped Holywell Town earn a 2-1 win over Guilsfield, whose goal came through Callum Bromley.
Cwmbran Celtic and Penydarren’s fourth-round tie was postponed and both sides will be in the draw for the JD Welsh Cup quarter-finals, which will be broadcast at 8pm on Monday 16 January on the FAW’s digital channels.
